Acronyms and definitions

Systems change refers to changing the policy and practices of
systems (such as law enforcement, business, government, health care, education,
religious institutions, etc.) to improve their treatment of survivors and their
children and to hold assailants accountable. It includes but is not limited to
training of personnel.

Social change is about changing society — changing the cultural attitudes
that support violence against women and children, fighting sexism and other
forms of oppression…..Social change is usually associated with community
organizing, including usually traditional tactics such as pickets, sit-ins, parades,
demonstrations, vigils, lawsuits, guerilla theatre, etc. It includes
education about the root causes.

Harm Reduction The term “harm reduction” refers to various strategies and approaches for reducing the physical and social harms associated with risk-taking behavior. Harm reduction is about preventing disease, death, incarceration and isolation. It is about improving and saving lives. Harm reduction is about making dangerous behaviors less dangerous.

Harm reduction seeks to prevent the harms caused by risk-taking behavior rather than attempting to eliminate that behavior altogether.
